About the depatment
The development of cybernetics was stimulated by not only the general need for automation of highly complex calculations in scientific experiments and the industrial need, but also the need for processing huge arrays of verbal information, the carrier of which were countless volumes of printed and handwritten documents of different nature.
According to the challenges of time on the Faculty of Philology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in 1964 the department of mathematical linguistics was created; its main direction was the modeling of natural language systems.
Training of specialists have been held so that the students would be able to learn the mathematical disciplines and at the same time would be ready to use structural and mathematical methods for study of language, to know well English and another foreign language, to have a practice at translating scientific and technical literature, to make formal analysis of language, to improve machine translation.
As well as regulatory and special courses on programming and information systems, psycholinguistics, engineering psychology, linguistic programming, linguistic support for the Automation Control Systems (ACS) have been given.

A significant influence on the research areas of mathematical linguistics department was made by an outstanding scientist, mathematician, cybernetist, Academician V.M. Glushkov. One of his students, then Associate Professor, Anatoly V. Anisimov (later Professor) headed the department in 1980 and marked the beginning of new scientific school of mathematical informatics.
In 1985 due to the fact that the range of departments’ interests was covering a wide range of problems in computer science, the department was renamed as the Department of Mathematical Informatics. The department has been worked actively and works in the following fields: artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, information security, distributed computing, local algorithms. Obtaining new results in learning the general properties of a large class of information transformers gave possibility to optimize the solution of the wide variety of problems: speeding processing super-large numbers, memory allocation, communication and cryptographic protection of information in computer networks. On the basis of a theoretical model of recursive data processors the new programming technique PARCS (Parallel Asynchronous Recursive Control Systems) was developed; a class of programming languages PARCS such as Pascal, C +, transputers, JAVA was realized. Among the achievements in the field of artificial intelligence it is necessary to notice the developed technology of computer-linguistic processing natural language texts. |
The graduates of the department successfully work in many sectors of the national economy.
At the department there is a scientific research laboratory of high-performance information processing systems, which was established by order of the rector dated 18.05.1983, № 335 "O".
Research laboratory head - head of the mathematical informatics chair, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor A.V. Anisimov. The laboratory was founded in order to intensification of scientific research on the mathematical informatics chair. The investigations in the direction of linguistic engineering were started by the efforts of department staff and research assistants of laboratory, which were among the first in Ukraine: dialog systems functioning with computer on natural language, generation of connected texts (fairy tales), three-dimensional computer graphics and others. Based on the developed specialized training complex (12 terminals CM 14-20) in 1983 Associate Professors Glibovets N. and Kulyabko P. for the first time in university conducted practical and laboratory works on programming in the computer lab.Research interests of the laboratory and the department include the modern directions of informatics: recursive-parallel data converters and its use, digital information processing systems, parallel programming, local algorithms on discrete structures, algorithms of associative and local search in semantic networks, computational linguistics, quantum algorithms, problems of artificial intelligence, computer graphics, information security in computer networks, computer processing of super-large numbers, intellectual knowledgebase, distributed computing, distance learning systems, distributive algorithms.
The present departments staff: Head of the chair, Prof. A.V. Anisimov, Prof. N.N. Glibovets, Prof.I.N. Lyashenko, Prof.I.N. Vergunova, Assoc. Prof. P.P. Kulyabko, Assoc. Prof.V.N. Tereshchenko, Assoc. Prof. M.G. Medvedev, Assoc. Prof. A.V. Derevyanchenko Assoc. Prof. A.A. Marchenko, Assoc. Prof. I.A. Zawadzki, Assist. Prof. V.Y. Taranukha, Assist. Prof. E.V.Porkhun.
In 2007, to the mathematical informatics chair the staff of the department of mathematical methods of ecological and economic researches, which was disbanded by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Cybernetics, has been joined. Below, on the collective photo the mathematical informatics department (but not complete) are shown, at the 2008.
